Each Memorial Day weekend, I look forward to kicking summer off with a big family BBQ at the house. I couldn’t resist sharing Redbook Magazine’s fun hosting tips from celebrity chef and food critic, Katie Lee. No champagne and white tablecloths needed; just a few original touches that keep this holiday weekend fête low-key.

Some of my favorite ideas:

1. Frozen Fruit: For a refreshingly sweet twist, use frozen fruit in lieu of ice in soda and seltzer. Up your game with adorable ice cubes: Place a berry in each cube of your ice tray before freezing.

2. Corn on the Cob: Throw some corn on the grill and then jazz up the classic BBQ side dish with Parmesan cheese and chili powder.

3. Zucchini Chips: Leave the prepackaged chips on the shelf! Thinly slice a zucchini, coat with egg and flour, then fry slices in a Dutch oven until golden brown. Voilà!

What will you do to celebrate the long weekend?

Berry Delicious Summer Pudding

Summer is here and I always find myself indulging in yummy seasonal fruits around this time of year – they’re just too good to resist. It seems that every time I go to the market, I make the mistake of overbuying fruit and forgetting to remind my family to eat it. I hate letting the fruit go to waste and recently came across a brilliant recipe on food52.com for Berry Summer Pudding. There are only a few easy ingredients and you can change up the fruit combination if you want (this recipe calls for blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries). It’s perfect to top off a summer cookout if you have a surplus of uneaten fruit and white bread hanging around ( and even stale bread is ok for this).  So celebrate, have some friends over and enjoy the sweetness of summer and this delicious recipe!

Recipe for the Perfect Thanksgiving

Every year I look forward to Thanksgiving. The smell of turkey, the sweet yet perfectly tart cranberry sauce, the flavorful stuffing, classic pumpkin pie and the assortment of irresistible desserts… these are all things I adore and hold close to my heart. But what I love the most about Thanksgiving is that I get to spend quality time with family and friends as we share a three-course meal, swapping stories over a helping of warm turkey and a generous serving of gravy and fresh cranberry sauce. Thanksgiving is an important day for my family and I as we reflect upon the past year and give thanks for all that we are blessed with.

What am I thankful for? I am grateful for my wonderful family and friends. I am also thankful for the opportunity to make my living doing what I love through Linnea’s Lights. To kick off this year’s Thanksgiving Dinner, I am planning on lighting our signature Pumpkin candle to set the holiday mood as the family and I start our holiday prep. Which scent will you be enjoying in the background this Thanksgiving?

Edible Indy spotlights Linnea’s Lights

I was honored when one of my favorite local magazines asked to include Linnea’s Lights in Edible Indy’s latest issue (on newsstands now). The sweet article titled “The Butcher, The Baker, The Candlestick Maker” puts an Indianapolis spin on the classic nursery rhyme, enlisting a longtime butcher, a German bread baker and, yours truly as the candle maker. Here, we share our thoughts on our crafts, memorable summer meals and favorite spots to dine out. Read the full story and make sure to pick up a copy for yourself!

Celebrating the Arrival of Summer

Memorial Day weekend is here again, which means sunshine and sundresses, watermelon and, of course, barbecue! This weekend throw the perfect barbecue for all your friends to start off the summer.

For ideas on what to eat and drink, check out the Huffington Posts’ hunger-inducing slide-show of Memorial Day recipes. Of course we all know that it’s not all about the food. Create a lovely picnic tabletop with Linnea’s Light’s Magnolia scented candles – they’re perfect for an early summer weekend – and some fresh flowers.

Happy barbecuing!
